Classification of Students

In the regular session, undergraduate students who are registered for and attending 12 or more semester hours are classified as full-time students.  Those who are registered for or are attending fewer than 12 semester hours are classified as part-time students.

Students are further classified as follows:

Classification Credit Hours
Freshman 0-23
Sophomore 24-53
Junior 54-86
Senior 87-124

Course Load

While the normal course load for an undergraduate student is 15 to 17 hours per semester, a full-time course load may range from 12 to 18 hours.  In determining course load the student, with the assistance of a faculty adviser, should take into consideration high school performance, College Board scores, grade-point average, and the amount of time available to apply to the academic course work.  Students who wish to take 19-21 hours must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher or be graduating at the end of the semester of the overload.  Wingspan, http://wingspan.winthrop.edu,  will allow students with the appropriate GPA to register for 21 hours.

Class Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend classes and should understand that they are responsible for the academic consequences of absence.  The student is responsible for all requirements of the course regardless of absences.

Instructors are not obligated to provide makeup opportunities for students who are absent.  The instructor will be responsible for judging the adequacy of cause for absence, and will decide if a makeup opportunity will be provided.

The instructor may establish the attendance requirements for the course.   The following policy will be in effect unless the instructor specifies otherwise:  If a student’s absences in a course total 25 percent or more of the class meetings for the course, the student will receive a grade of N if the student withdraws from the course before the withdrawal deadline; after that date, unless warranted by documented extenuating circumstances as described in the university catalog, a grade of F or U shall be assigned.

Withdrawing from the University

Students who find it necessary to discontinue their college work during a semester or summer session should officially withdraw from the University.  Students who wish to initiate the withdrawal process should go to the Office of Records and Registration, 126 Tillman.

Failure to withdraw officially may seriously affect a student's eligibility for future readmission or for transfer to another institution.

Degree Requirements

The baccalaureate degrees require the completion of a minimum of 124 semester hours of credit, including all courses required in the specified degree program, and a final grade-point average of 2.00 or better on all courses which are taken on a letter-grade basis at Winthrop University.  Students must also achieve a 2.00 GPA in courses counted toward the major and minor programs.

Undergraduate Degree Requirement Audit

Students should request a Degree Requirement Audit through the Student Services Center immediately following the semester in which the student earns 70 hours toward his/her degree.  Each student must have a signed Degree Requirement Audit in effect and on file in the Academic  Records Office prior to receiving a diploma from Winthrop University.

The Degree Requirement Audit is prepared by the College of Business Administration and states the remaining graduation requirements for the student's chosen degree program.  Once the student has applied for graduation, a final audit is done and a remaining requirements letter is sent to the student showing what is needed to complete the degree.

Academic Probation and Ineligibility

You should strive to maintain the highest grade point ratio possible.  A 2.0 grade-point ratio is the minimum permitted for graduation.  A student is subject to academic action (probation, suspension, or dismissal) any semester or summer session in which one or more semester hours are attempted.  The combined summer sessions, called a summer term, are considered equivalent to a semester.  Students enrolled at Winthrop University must earn a minimum cumulative grade-point ratio in accordance with the eligibility schedule below in order to avoid being placed on academic probation.

                                                              Eligibility Schedule

Class Cumulative Hours Earned Cumulative Grade-Point Ratio
Freshman 0-23 1.75
Sophomore 24-53 1.85
Junior 54-86 2.0
Senior 87 or more 2.0

Initial failure to meet the cumulative grade-point ratio according to the earned hours will result in probation.  A subsequent violation in the next semester or summer term will result in suspension for the immediately succeeding regular academic semester and any intervening summer session.  Students readmitted after suspension shall be considered on probation, and failure to meet the specified minimum cumulative grade-point ratio will result in a second suspension for a full academic year (12 months).  Readmission for a second time places the student on probation.  Failure to achieve the specified minimum cumulative grade-point ratio after the second suspension will result in permanent dismissal from the University.

Credit earned at any other institution while a student is ineligible to enroll at Winthrop University cannot be applied to any degree at Winthrop University

Students on academic probation will be limited to a total of no more than 15 semester hours.  However, a student on academic probation whose semester grade-point ratio is 2.0 or higher will not be suspended at the close of that semester, even though the cumulative grade-point ratio remains below the minimum required ratio for that classification.  Nonetheless, the student's status will remain "on probation."

The student shall be removed from probation at the close of a semester in which the cumulative grade-point ratio meets the required minimum standard for his/her classification.
